• Collect: I thank you, Father, that when I was powerless to effect any change in myself, you sent your only Son, so that in the weakness and curse of his cross he might become strength over sin in me, and the blessing of life forever. Amen.

• Good works are to be done because of God’s command, the exercise of faith, to make confession, and give thanks. Good works should be done for those reasons. They are done in the flesh which is not yet wholly renewed, hampering the movements of the Holy Spirit, and imparting some of its uncleanness. Yet, for Christ’s sake, they are holy, divine works, sacrifices, and acts pertaining to the rule of Christ, who in this way displays his kingdom before the world. In these works, he sanctifies hearts and represses the devil, and in order to retain the gospel among people, God openly uses the confession of saints to oppose the kingdom of the devil and in our weakness, declares his power.
