The Gospel Secret
Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary
Scripture Text: Galatians 3:6 and Romans 7:14–25
Series: Comments on Galatians
Luther’s words that God “winks” at our sins does not mean that he does not care that we sin, as though he were encouraging us to sin all the more. Rather, it means that we should have faith that sin is not our undoing. God shares a gospel secret with us, that he has provided a Deliverer from our “body of sin.” When we sin, and we certainly will so long as we reside in this flesh, he will forgive us our sins until death delivers us from this body of sin.
People who have faith in Christ do not depend upon human abilities to be sinless. The sin that still dwells within them will bring sin each day. But God has brought those who believe in the Son this good news with a wink: he forgives them every day for Christ’s sake.
