Numbered among Sinners
Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary
Scripture Text: Galatians 3:13 and Isaiah 53:6–12
Series: Comments on Galatians
Why did Christ have to be hanged on the cross? Because it was the will of the Lord (Isaiah 53:10) that he be hanged with us for our transgressions. He bore the sin of a world of sinners. The sentence pronounced over us (Romans 3:23) was met by him. He took all our sins and died for them on the cross. The death that we deserved was suffered by him, by a good and righteous man, but an incarnate man, God born in the flesh — at once God and Man. God himself was numbered with sinners, bearing the sins of all mankind, enduring the cross so that we might be saved and justified to him. Why did Christ have to be hanged on the cross? There was no other way.
