It Is Written
Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary
Scripture Text: Galatians 3:8 and Matthew 4:1–10
Series: Comments on Galatians
What came first, the chicken or the egg? God’s Word came first. I know; it does not make for a very good joke. Still, it is God’s living Word that creates and holds all things together (Colossians 1:17). God’s Word comes first in all sorts of ways. And finally, his Word must be relied upon as the final word. This is especially true when humans start to invent their own words, customs, laws, and religion. The devil tried to do this to Jesus. “Command these stones to become loaves of bread.” “Throw yourself down.” “Fall down and worship me.” To these, Jesus responds, “It is written.” God’s Word comes first and last, before and after laws, before works, before religion, before human reason. Our faith in his Word, which is the promise of his very self, is what upholds us until there is no time to measure — and will uphold us forever.
