Today's Scripture Jigsaw

God’s mercy pursues us; he never gives up on us. The law also pursues us, as does its curse: death. The law also condemns us, as no one keeps the law perfectly as the law demands. The due course of this failure is death. But take heart; the law can only condemn. It cannot exact the punishment. It condemns us to death but cannot put us to death. Still, if left to law-keeping, our due reward, payment, or wage (Romans 3:23) is death. This is God’s decree and he is able to follow through on the threat. Or not.

For Christ’s sake, sinners may be pardoned. God’s pursuing mercy finds its target through the cross. Through faith in God’s grace through Christ, the law’s condemnation remains but cannot follow through. In Christ, there is only everlasting life.
