Believing the Promise
Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary
Scripture Text: Galatians 3:7 and John 3:16–18
Series: Comments on Galatians
I am not saved because I was born into the right family or country. I am not counted as righteous before God because I have somehow succeeded in not sinning anymore. Nor am I redeemed because I have gone to seminary, answered the call to ministry, attend church, serve on Church Council, or do anything. Allow me one more sentence to repeat and emphasize that I — and indeed, you or anyone else — am not protected from eternal wrath and damnation by doing a blessed thing. Like Abraham, we are justified to God by believing him.
Of course, we are to believe in him but Abraham believed what God said; he believed his promise. We too, must believe God’s promise, for nothing else will do, nothing else will justify, nothing else will save. What is that promise but that whoever believes in Christ Jesus as Savior of the world will be saved from sin, eternal death, and damnation. More than that, each one who believes will be saved into everlasting life with God.
